PROGRAM PURPOSE

The curriculum in Business Administration provides a solid foundation in both quantitative techniques and management theory. Taking the behavioral science/human relations point of view, the program recognizes that sound practice requires sound theory. The case method is often used to illustrate theory in practice. Ethics and a global business orientation are emphasized throughout the curriculum.

The breadth of expertise required is evident from the many courses offered on varied topics: Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Marketing, Management, Organizational Behavior, Business Communication, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Law, Finance, Banking, Human Resources Management and Management Information Systems.

INTRODUCTION

VUB’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program provides an opportunity for individuals to prepare for managerial positions in today’s complex and dynamic environment. The program places strong emphasis on the application of business theory to the realities of the business world. It also recognizes the demands of an increasingly competitive, multicultural economy characterized by rapid technological innovation and superior product and service quality demands. The MBA degree program consists of a prescribed pattern of graduate courses. The entire program is based on a common core courses, which enriches the functions of the executive and the environment of the administrator. Beyond this core, the student will choose to study in some depth a number of specialization and related courses.

The majority of classes are conducted in the evening with some courses offered during the day. Holiday class sessions are also available. This enables professionally employed men and women to earn an advanced degree under the direction of faculty members who possess excellent academic credentials and pragmatic business expertise.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The MBA program’s objectives are to develop:

  • Management skills of administrators and managers in business, government, health care and nonprofit organizations.
  • Ethical standards to provide a framework for responsible decision making.
  • Problem-solving skills through the use of analytical techniques, case studies and internship.
  • Computer skills to utilize PCs and networks in making management information systems more effective.
  • Global awareness, as more and more business compete in a world marketplace.

To help the student achieve these objectives, the University relies on faculty members who are dedicated to teaching. The faculty combines broad business experience and academic training, which help make the learning experience at VUB unique.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Admission Requirements

Individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline from a recognized college or university will be considered for admission to the MBA program. The applicant’s undergraduate grade point average (GPA), GMAT score and work experience will be considered in the admission process. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate computer literacy and have received undergraduate credit for precalculus. A personal interview will be encouraged and may be required.

Upon acceptance, students will receive a copy of their planned academic program. Students are encouraged to meet periodically with the program director to discuss academic progress, career placement and special needs.

Degree Requirements

A total of 60 credit hours of graduate course work are required for the MBA degree. Depending on undergraduate preparation, students can reduce credit hours by as many as 21 credits as waivers for which a student may be eligible and a minimum of 39 credit hours must be taken at VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF BANGLADESH.

The MBA curriculum for students with a four-year business undergraduate degree will generally consist of 60 credit hours. Students who have weak undergraduate grades or have not taken undergraduate business courses in accounting, statistics and economics will be required to take the equivalent. Students may be required to take one or more English courses. Under the MBA curriculum there are general education courses, required, specialization and optional courses. In addition, there is a requirement for writing a thesis, which carry 6 credits.
