Computer science is the study of Information and algorithms within the contest of real and abstract computing devices. Computer scientist is interested in such topics as the representation and storage of information, algorithms to access, display, edit, and transform information, programming languages to express algorithms, and Hardware and software processors to execute algorithms. These concern lead to practical development in computer systems software, such as operating system & compilers, in application areas, such as artificial intelligence, computer graphics, and computational biology, and also lead to theatrical investigations of computers, algorithms, and data.

Computer engineering is a closely related filed that is concerned with the design and practical application of computer hardware and software system to the solution of technological, economic, and societal programs. The computer engineer analyzes a program and select from a variety of tools and technology design, software creation, and systems integration. The program provides an in-depth education in computer engineering while retaining strong foundation in traditional electrical engineering and computer science.

The Computer engineering program involves digital hardware, software and architecture. Mathematics, engineering design, laboratory work, and communication-skills development are also emphasized. A major team project must be complete during the final year of course duration. The object of undergraduate education in computer engineering is to develop broadly education and competent graduate for professional carriers or graduate studies. Especially important is a foundation that will endure technology advance and changes.

INTRODUCTION

In keeping with the development, growth and diversification within the computer field, the baccalaureate program in Computer Science addressees the two major areas existing today: the Computer Science Engineering and Computer Science Information Technology.

A graduate in Computer Science and Information Technology will be well prepared to undertake any graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree in Computer Science, as well as programs in Operations Research, Applied Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or Statistics.

Graduates in Computer Science and Information Technology are among the most sought after by all segments of the economy. Not only is the job market bright for Computer Science graduates, the level of income for those entering the field is among the highest of all college graduates.

FACULTY

The breadth of faculty experience is evident from the many courses offered on varied topics embracing programming languages, operating systems, simulation and modeling, systems analysis, computer architecture, windows technology, software engineering, computer networks, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, database management, compiler theory, display systems, computer performance measurement, object-oriented methodologies, data communications and distributed systems.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Every applicant, without any exception, must fulfill the admission requirements as laid down by VUB. Admission test and interview for admission into the first semester will be held thrice a year as decided by VUB. No interim or supplementary admission test or interview will be arranged.

A higher secondary certificate or its equivalent in science with mathematics and physics or other fields of study is the basic educational requirement. However, students passing HSC from Humanities and Business group may also apply for this program provided they complete some additional courses determined by VUB. Minimum qualifying points to be eligible to apply is 4 (four), calculated on the following basis:

Certificate Division
First
Second
Third
SSC/Equivalent 3 2 0
HSC/Equivalent 3 2 0

For all foreign certificates, equivalence will be determined by the University Equivalence Committee.

ADMISSION TEST

Applicants will be required to sit for an admission test designed to judge their abilities and aptitude for the program. The test will be held in Dhaka as arranged by VUB. The admission test will be held on the following three areas:

(a) General education knowledge

(b) Quantitative aptitude

(c) Analytical and verbal aptitude

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The Bachelor of Science degree requirements will be as follows:

  • Completion of 120 credit hours.
  • Completion of a project and thesis with a point grade (6 credit hours).
  • Passing of all courses individually and maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.00.
